Biography

Sebastian Stier was born 1970 in East-German Köthen/Anhalt. He was trained in the children’s
composition class of Günther Eisenhardt in Halle from 1984 to 1989. 1991-1997 he studied
composition with Paul-Heinz Dittrich at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Berlin. 1998-
2001 he completed his studies with Hanspeter Kyburz in Berlin. Since 2004 he is teaching theory
at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. From 2007 all his works have been published by
Edition Juliane Klein. Stier was awarded the ›Busoni Förderpreis‹ from the Berlin Academy of
Arts 1997, the Stuttgart composition prize 2001 and the 1st prize of the composition contest of
the Weimar Spring Festival for contemporary music 2006. He was commissioned by the
Rheinsberg music academy, the Dresden Center for contemporary music, several German public
culture radios as MDR and WDR, the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the Wittener Tage für neue
Kammermusik. His works have been played by the Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien,
ensemble recherche, Ensemble Resonanz, SONAR Quartett, and others. In 2007 a portrait CD
was released by the German Music Council.
