Biography

Jozef Podprocký (* 10. 6. 1944, Žakarovce, Slovakia) studied the piano and composition at the conservatory in Košice (1961 – 1965), later composition at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Bratislava with Ján Cikker and Alexander Moyzes (1965 – 1970). Already during his student times he began to teach music theory classes at the Košice conservatory and helped to re-establish composition teaching there. He continued his pedagogical career until his retirement in 2013. In the years 1986–1988 he was the director of the Slovak State Philharmonic in Košice. He co-founded the Music Society of the Hemerka Family, acting to this day as its chair. He has been awarded the Ján Levoslav Bella Prize twice (in 1978 for String Quartet No. 2 and in 2014 for lifelong achievement), and received the Hemerka Family Foundation Prize (1994), the Award of the Mayor of Košice (1994), The Critics’ Prize (2003) and the Award of the City of Košice (2009).
