Biography

DANIEL MARTINHO was born on the 13th of December 1985 in Vila Nova de Gaia. After studying at the Academia de Música de Espinho (guitar class of Ricardo Abreu), he initiated his university studies in 2006 at the ESMAE (Superior School of Music, Arts and Performance in Porto), where he completed the Composition Degree. Here he had the opportunity to work with professors such as Carlos Guedes, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Eugénio Amorim and Fernando C. Lapa. At the ESMAE he also participated in seminars and private lessons with Klaas de Vries, Magnus Lindberg, Jonathan Harvey, Helmut Lachenmann, Vic Hoyland, Ricardo Climent, among others. Later, he began working on his Masters Degree in Composition and Musical Theory, at the same institution.

Two of his works for ensemble – "Cosmos" (2007) and "Concerto para Contrabaixo" (2009) – were chosen to be performed by the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, under the direction of Rolf Gupta and Peter Rundel. Both events took place at the Casa da Música (Porto). In 2009 he participated as guest in Labo#8 (composition workshop) in Belgium, led by Jean-Luc Fafchamps and Jean-Marc Sullon.

He was appointed Young Composer-In-Residence at the Casa da Música in 2010 and within this context three works were commissioned: “Antologia do Tempo 1. Génese” for string quartet, "Antologia do Tempo 2. Ritual - fluxo contínuo" for ensemble and "Antologia do Tempo 3. Apogeu" for orchestra. This triptych was premiered by the Matosinhos String Quartet, at the Casa da Música, by the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música (concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of this ensemble) at the Casa da Música, under the direction of Peter Rundel and by the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música, at the Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery, in Matosinhos; it was also presented at the Casa da Música, Centro de Arte de Ovar and Centro Cultural de Ílhavo, under the baton of Pedro Neves.

His works have been commissioned by the MR SC & Wild Bones Gang for the Second Low Brass Festival in Alcobaça; by the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa (Portuguese Symphonic Band) – premiered at the Casa da Música and performed in Shaoxing, China – for the Second Edition of the Concurso Nacional de Composição (National Composition Contest); by the Doppio Ensemble for the USA Tour; by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble, among others.

Daniel Martinho was jury member at the Concurso de Composição Século XXI (21st Century Composition Contest), organized by the Escola Profissional de Música and Academia de Música de Viana do Castelo, as well as at the Second Edition of the Concurso Nacional de Composição BSP (Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa). He is one of the founding members of the Ensemble Contemporâneo do Porto (ECP). Parallel to his work as a composer, he works as teacher at the Academia de Música de Costa Cabral (Musical Theory, Analysis and Composition Techniques and Music History), at the Conservatório de Música da Maia (Analysis and Composition Techniques) and at the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (Introduction to Composition). He also composes for theatre, writes arrangements and orchestrations for different instrumental groups.
