Biography

Jana Kmiťová was born in 1976 in Prešov (Slovakia), she studied piano with Melánia Hermanová and composition with Jozef Podprocký at the Conservatory in Košice, afterwards composition with Dušan Martinček at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (1996 – 2001) and with Michael Jarrell at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna (1999 – 2004). She graduated with the Rector’s Prize (Würdigungspreis).

She participated in many compositional courses – in Czech Republic, France, Germany, Austria, Canada, Switzerland. In 2000 and 2002 she received scholarship of Japan foundation Nippon-Wien, and in 2001, 2003 and 2004 she took part in the Takefu Festival in Japan, where she received a compositional prize. In 2002 participated in the German project „Musik für Ravensbrück“ (commission of composition for soprano, flute, 2 accordions and piano). Between 2009 and 2013 Jana Kmiťová cooperated with the international competition Musical Spring in Rajec (compositions for the winners of the competition), in 2011 her poem “so langsam wie ein haar wächst” (as slowly as a hair grows) was included in the anthology The best 100 sent poems from the German-speaking region.

In 2013 she received a scholarship of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture and in 2014 State scholarship for composition (Staatsstipendium für Komposition) of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture. Jana Kmiťová is holder of the Ján Levoslav Bella Prize for 2008. Her compositions have been presented at festivals at home and abroad: she has collaborated with Klangforum Wien, Deutsches Symphonie Orchestra, Arditti Quartett and others. She is also actively involved in literature and fine art.
