Leonidas Kanaris (b. 1963) is one of the important Greek composers of his generation. His main tutors were: Theodore Antoniou (Composition Diploma), Thomas Simaku (PhD in Music - Composition at the University of York-U.K.).
He has written about 57 compositions, including works for, solo instruments, chamber music ensembles, string and symphonic orchestra, concertos, one symphonic cantata, cycles of songs and vocal compositions, choral music, musical narrations, theatre and film music. His compositions are often performed in Greece and other countries (UK, USA, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, Poland, Finland, Egypt, Denmark, Ukraine, Albania, Cyprus, Russia, Ethiopia, Germany) by various well-known artists and ensembles, and commonly receive very good reviews.
He has already received ten awards and distinctions. Several of his works have been published and recorded on cd, included his personal cd, ‘One night when…’. In 2003 his ‘Elegiaco’ Woodwind Quintet’ had been performed in ‘World Music Days’ (Slovenia) of ISCM.
