Biography

The Slovak contemporary composer Viera Janárčeková (1951), born in Svit, Eastern Slovakia, travelled abroad to pursue her music studies. She studied the piano and cembalo at the AMU in Prague. In the 70’s she immigrated to Germany. In the late 80’s and in the 90’s she regularly participated in the Darmstadt courses in contemporary music. Her compositions gradually won acclaim at the concert stages in Germany and were successfully performed at international festivals. Viera Janárčeková participated actively in several culture projects in Berlin and Kassel, Germany. In 2000 Gidon Kremer invited her as composer-in-residence to the festival in Lockenhausen, where she premiered four pieces. She founded and organizes, together with Barbara Brauckmann, the concert cycle Ost-West-Podium in Kassel, which aims at intensifying the cultural exchange between Eastern and Western Europe. She has been awarded several international prizes. Her works were recorded by BR, SWF, DRS, WDR, Radio Praha and the Slovak Radio.
