Mikko Heiniö studied composition with Joonas Kokkonen at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and with Witold Szalonek in West Berlin. He earned a doctorate in musicology in 1984 and was appointed professor of musicology at the University of Turku in 1985-2005 and composer-in-residence of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997. He was chairman of the Society of Finnish Composers 1992-2010 and vice president of the Finnish Composers’ Copyright Bureau 1999-2014. Heiniö's compositions include nine piano concertos, two symphonies, numerous chamber works and three operas: the church opera The Knight and the Dragon, The Hour of the Serpent and Erik XIV.
