Biography

MARY FINSTERER is the Chamber Music Australia Chair of Composition and a Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University.

Recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative composers, most recently Mary’s latest symphonic work, LAKE ICE – MISSED TALES NO.1, was a finalist in Australian Art Music Orchestral Work of the Year Award 2014 while her large-scale piece AEREA, was awarded the Australian Art Music Instrumental Work of the Year Award 2014.

Also working in the area of screen music, Mary’s score for the feature film SOUTH SOLITARY (dir. Shirley Barrett) was a finalist in Film Critics Circle of Australia in 2010, and has since been released on the CD label ABC Classics|Universal. Mary has received numerous prestigious national and international awards including the prestigious Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize in 2009, a Churchill Fellowship in 2006, and her works have been featured at several International Society for Contemporary Music Festivals.
