Biography

Praised by The New York Times as “meticulous and expressive,” composer/percussionist Matthew Evans dedicates himself to the performance and proliferation of contemporary art music of any kind. Currently based in Brooklyn, Matt has performed around the country at acclaimed venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Kitchen, the Tennessee Theater and New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. He performs regularly with new music groups such as Bearthoven, Contemporaneous, and Ensemble Signal, while creating material with Tigue, rock band Rokenri, and ambient duo Private Elevators. An avid collaborator, Evans has worked closely on world premieres of composers Robert Honstein, Adrian Knight, Brooks Frederickson, Fjola Evans and Alex Weiser and performed with Mantra Percussion, Sonic Generator, Tristan Perich and members of the Bang on a Can All-Stars and Eighth Blackbird. Matt has been a featured performer on Q2 Music, the Tribeca New Music Festival, Bang on a Can Marathon, the MATA Festival, the Slingshot Music Festival and the Big Ears Festival. As a presenter, Matt curates and produces Selective Truths, a Brooklyn based concert series focused on challenging and innovative work by the newest generation of composers and performers. The series sheds the barriers of genre and presents only the highest caliber performances. Matt received a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Michael Burritt and acted as director of the student led new music ensemble Ossia. Evans completed his undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University under the direction of Dr. Susan Powell and Mr. Joe Krygier.
