Emfietzis, Grigorios - M - Greece

Biography

Gregory Emfietzis was born (1980) and grew up in Thessaloniki, Greece. He started his musical life by playing the violin and singing in a children's choir. Later on, he performed with a number of groups as violinist, participated in numerous international festivals, concerts and operas as member of vocal ensembles, while also being involved in various projects as composer and multimedia performer.

Emfietzis moved to the UK in 2004 after completing his studies for a Bachelor Degree in Music Science & Art (University of Macedonia, Greece). A Master’s Degree in Composition & Contemporary Music (University of Huddersfield) followed and Emfietzis has recently completed his PhD in Composition (Brunel University, London - under the supervision of C. Fox, J. Walshe and R. Barrett).

Based on his day-to-day life experiences and his interest in dramatic, psychological and unresolved situations, Emfietzis’s work and research is concerned with the inherited and implemented notions of theatricality in music performance, the scenography of sound and the manipulation of space, as well as the interaction between performers and the audience.

His music has been played in concerts, festivals, workshops and multidisciplinary events in Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, UK, and USA. Amongst other collaborations, Emfietzis has worked with Orkest de Ereprijs (The Netherlands), Asamisimasa (Norway), Warehouse Ensemble (UK), NOISE-BRIDGE (USA), London Contemporary Orchestra (UK), Quasars Ensemble (Slovakia), OnePlusOne (Finland/Latvia), Okeanos Ensemble (UK), Sonic Inertia Performance Group (USA), Goldberg Ensemble (UK), In Spe (Lithuania) and the Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music (Greece).

Emfietzis is the co-founder of Epikyklos (2005), a non-profit organisation for the promotion of contemporary music, the Artistic Director of the Metapraxis Ensemble (2009), experimenting on the expansion of musical performance, and the co-founder of Underscore Duo (2011), a creative group that invite collaboration and artistic dialogue with composers, musicians and other artists.
