Biography

Edgardo Cantón Aguirre was born in Paris, but he left to Chile, where he studied Composition at Universidad de Chile.
Later, he won some scholarships, which allowed Master’s Degree and postgraduated courses in Spain, France and Italy.
He has obtained the first prize in the Chile’s Symphony Orchestra Contest with “Música en espera de su imagen”, which was conducted by Irwin Hoffman. In 2003, he composed “El gran oceano”, with Pablo Neruda’s writings. It was conducted by David del Pino on 2004.
In 2006, he composed the soundtrack for the Chilean movie “El rey de San Gregorio”.
In 2008, “AL-Mumit” was also performed with the Chile’s Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Nesterowycz. This work was composed for symphony orchestra, electronic means, choir, acoustic and electric guitars. He was among the Altazor nominees due to this work. In 2010, “Atacama imaginario” was assigned and conducted by Eduardo Browne. In August 2011, he composed for the Chile’s Symphony Orchestra “Ahad”, conducted by Andrew Gourlay. He was among the Altazor nominees again for this work. In 2012, he composed “Ul Kantum: Retratos de Arauco”.
In November of 2013, he released his double compilation record “Olas de un mismo mar”.
His works comprise genres such as chamber, symphony and electronic music, soundtracks and theater. His compositions have been interpreted in Chile, USA, France, Spain, Israel, Hungary, Greece... Nowadays, he is an academic at Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and he is a member of the live improvisation group “Tierra de Larry”.
