Biography

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1984. I studied composition with Aylton Escobar and Silvio Ferraz, and attended masterclasses with Emmanuel Nunes, Tristan Murail, Stefano Gervasoni,
Mizato Mochizuki, Mark André, among others. I received my academic education – Bachelor,
Master and PhD (Marcos Branda Lacerda as supervisor) at University of São Paulo (2002-2016)
and I also studied at Musikhochschule Stuttgart (2013-14) with Marco Stroppa. My works have
been performed in concerts and festivals in Brazil, such as Festival Música Nova (SP), Bienal
Música Hoje (Curitiba), and Bienal de Música Contemporânea Brasileira (RJ), as well as in several
other countries: Canada (Alberta), England (Oxford, London), France (Le mois des compositeurs -
Marseille), Germany (Festival tonArt - Esslingen, Festival Musik unserer Zeit - Münster), Italy
(highSCORE Festival - Pavia), and USA (SonicFestival, MakeMusikNewYork Festival, and
Focus!Festival - New York). I worked in collaboration with several ensembles and orchestras, such
as OSP - Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná, OCAM - Orquestra de Câmara da USP, Camerata Aberta,
Télémaque Ensemble, Quartetto Indaco, Mivos Quartet, and Ensemble Recherche. Currently I am a
teacher at EMESP - Sao Paulo State School of Music, a researcher at NuSom - Research Center on
Sonology, and an activist at Sonora - Musics and Feminisms. Among the various issues that have
marked my research and my recent creative work, I would highlight: the relationship between
sonority, space and listening; the notions of image and materiality; the dimensions of memory and
experience; the orality and the (auto)biographical space; and the field of feminism. My works are
available at www.valeriabonafe.com.
