Ball, Derek William - M - Ireland

Biography

Derek Ball was born in Donegal and received most of his education in Dublin, where he studied composition with Archie Potter and later with Jim Wilson. He began his composing career in the late 1960s, but was diverted into a medical career which curtailed but never completely stopped his compositional activity.

There was a major upsurge since about 2000 linked to his retirement from medicine in 2004, with a series of orchestral pieces, operas, and many chamber works. In recent years he has had numerous performances of chamber music in Ireland and Scotland, and some international exposure. Other performances have included a number of orchestral pieces with the National Symphony Orchestra in the National Concert Hall in Dublin, and a multimedia work in the Simmonscourt complex of the RDS in Dublin with the Donegal Chamber Orchestra.
