Alvarez, Pedro - M - Chile

Biography

Pedro Alvarez (Chile, 1980) is a composer mainly focused on the creation of contemporary chamber
music that challenges traditional aesthetic ideals of processual fluency and development. Instead he
aims at new forms of musical experience based on contemplative approaches to static ‘objectivised’
situations, radically contrasting brutal formal simplicity with highly detailed textures.
Alvarez obtained his PhD at University of Huddersfield under Liza Lim, receiving the “Vicechancellor's
Award to an outstanding Research Degree Thesis”. Previous studies encompassed
Philosophy and Composition at Universidad de Chile (Licentiate and MA degrees), private
composition studies with James Dillon, and MPhil at University of London. Besides formal studies,
he has actively participated in many composition seminars across Europe.
Widely performed by established specialised ensembles and a younger generation of exceptionally
talented musicians, Pedro Alvarez's music has featured in concerts and festivals in Australia, Austria,
Belgium, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
UK and USA.
