Biography

ERAY ALTINBÜKEN was born in 1975, in Istanbul. He has a PhD degree in musical composition from Istanbul Technical University Centre for Advanced Studies in Music (ITU/MIAM) where he studied under Prof. Ilhan Usmanbas, Prof. Kamran Ince and Prof. Hasan Ucarsu. He is currently working as Assistant Professor at Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory Composition Department.

Altınbüken’s music could be described as a fusion of post-tonal harmonic elements with western popular music, Turkish Makam Music and Turkish Folk Music features within a contemporary Western art music framework. Most of his compositions have been performed by various chamber ensembles in Istanbul, most notably the Variations for Violin and Piano in Borusan 3rd International Mediterranean Contemporary Music Festival and Kumdaki Kan (Blood on the Sand) written for kemenche, guitar and cello, in Istanbul International Spectral Music Conference. His song cycle for chamber ensemble and soprano, entitled Atonal Pop Suite: Hazy Songs centred around the use of atonal harmony with form and rhythmic structures of pop and rock, has been supported by ITU as an artistic research project and recently premiered and recorded.

Altınbüken worked as artistic events co-manager of ITU/MIAM (with cellist Yelda Ozgen) where they organised more than 200 events including festivals, concerts, masterclasses and seminars; most notably Divertimento Festivals (2005 and 2007), Sesin Yolculuğu (Sound Journey) Contemporary Music Festivals (2006-2008-2009) among them. In 2003-2005, he led a composers collective in Istanbul (with composer Onur Türkmen) organising Açık Sahne (Open Scene) monthly new music concerts. Altınbüken also has music written for movies, documentary series and cartoons mostly for Turkish Radio and Television TRT.
