2010_ISCM - SOUTH AFRICA

Year:
Report:

New Music South Africa continues to work energetically toward developing opportunities for composers, students and audiences to create and encounter contemporary music in 2010.

l  Our main event for the year is the third Unyazi Festival of Electronic Music to be held in Durban between 23-26 September, hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s School of Music.  The festival provides a platform for electronic music composers, both local and international, and introduces South African audiences to worldwide developments in electronic music. In addition, the 2010 festival plans to hold workshops for young electronic music composers.  Unyazi-3 will be co-curated by South African composers and researchers Professor Jürgen Bräuninger and Fiona Tozer.  International composers and performers presenting their work include Nicolas Collins (keynote speaker, editor in chief of  Leonardo Music Journal, USA), Lukas Ligeti and Burkina Electric (Burkina Faso, Austria, Germany), Luc Houtkamp and the POW Ensemble (Holland), Die Schrauber (Mexico, USA, Germany), and Rodrigo Sigal (Mexico).

l  NewMusicSA's collaboration with the Visby International Composers' Centre continues this year with South African composers Julia Raynham and Fiona Tozer resident at the VICC in February this year.

l  After the very successful South African tour of string quartets commissioned under NewMusicSA's “The Bow Project” in July and August last year, the Danish Nightingale Quartet has recorded all the works for release. The CD will be available in 2010.

l  NewMusicSA will continue its work developing young compositional talent in 2010 through  workshops and concerts.
