“The New Latvian Music Festival” February 2008

with 11 concerts, in Riga,  works by 37 composers represented, orgainised by Latvian Composers Union (www.lks.org.lv)

“Latvian composers also need a celebration – a time to account, a retrospective look at what has been accomplished, future goals and the presentation of challenges”, says the festival artistic director and chairman of the Composers’ Union, Uģis Prauliņš,

„Since we were in school, we clearly remember the memorable Composers’ Union general meetings, when only new works were performed at concerts. I am convinced that the process is a sign of vitality, and this kind of music festival confirms that we are caring for our musical culture.“

The exchange of ideas and opinions is also vital, which is why the fesitval was closed with a discussion of the recent tendencies in Latvian music at that Latvian Academey of Music on February 29th.

Tenso Days in Riga 2008 October 23 - 25,

as part of the new music festival ARENA.

The Tenso Association (www.tenso-vocal.org) was formed in 2005 by Europe’s leading professional choirs with the objective of promoting vocal music and to become a platform for information exchange and dialogue between professional choirs, ensembles, composers, students, conductors and listeners, incorporating the vocal music professionals to join their efforts and open a new chapter in the trends of European vocal music.

The festival had also feature world premieres of works by Latvian composers. These include:

-       Chiaroscuro for chamber orchestra by Gustavs Fridrihsons on October 18 at the opening concert

-       horo horo hata hata for chamber choir by Santa Ratniece on October 24

-       Herbst for chamber choir by Gundega Šmite on October 24

-       Laika stencila (Stencil of Time) for acoustic instruments and electronics by Benjamin Thigpen (France) and Andris Dzenītis on October 31

-       Nezināmā sākums (The Beginning of the Unknown) for string quartet and electronics by Anita Mieze on October 31

The Tenso Days had also feature a meeting of choir managers on Saturday, the 25th, which included presentations by Tenso, discussions, and a presentation on Latvian music. This was an opportunity to meet representatives of other European choirs.

Composer Anitra Tumševica victorious at Bodø Opera Competition with opera Sarkans

Latvian composer Anitra Tumševica, a master’s student at the Latvian Academy of Music, was awarded not only the main prize by the jury, but received also the audience award for her chamber opera Sarkans (Red), at the opera competition in Bodø, Norway, which concluded on October 9. 19 composers participated in the competition, including 12 composers from other Scandinavian states, as well as the Baltic states.

Sarkans, after being translated to Norwegian, is planned to be performed at the Bodø Theatre in the autumn of 2009.

Five fragments of the opera were performed for the international jury. The performance was directed by Elisabet Ljungar, and featured soloists Hildegunn Pettersen (soprano), Marianne E. Andersen (mezzo-soprano), Fredrik Akselberg (tenor), Patrik Landgren(baritone), Ludvig Lindström (bass-baritone), and conductor Oleg Snetkov and the Bodø Sinfonietta.

The libretto is by young Latvian poet Jānis Dumbris, and is a story about young people, their relationships, as well as the rioting in suburbs of Paris in 2005.
