ISCM-Romanian Section Annual Report 2007-2008

Throughout 2007 and 2008 the ISCM-Romanian Section developed an intense activity to promote Romanian contemporary music at home and abroad, while maintaining and developing contacts and exchanges of information in the field of the contemporary music with sections of ISCM, organizations and institutions in Romania and abroad involved in the promotion of contemporary music.

Below, briefly, in this report, we present the main achievements of the Romanian Section of ISCM - which works in the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists, institution which gives a constant and decisive support in its projects:

- The Romanian Section of ISCM organized in 2007 and 2008 the MERIDIAN, ISCM-Romanian Section International Festival (3rd Edition, Bucharest, 10-14 December 2007; 4th Edition: 8-12 December 2008), with support from the Ministry of Culture, Religious Affairs and National Heritage and Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists.

- The Romanian Section of ISCM was co-organizer of the 18th International Contemporary Music Week Festival (Bucharest, 23-30 May 2008).

- Periodic updating of the official website of the ISCM-Romanian Section: http://www.cimec.ro/Muzica/SNR/default.htm (in Romanian and English), in collaboration with the Institute for Cultural Memory of the Ministry of Culture, Religious Affairs and National Heritage (CIMEC).

- Participation of delegates of the ISCM-Romanian Section at the ISCM World Music Days Festival 2008 in Vilnius (Lithuania) and the General Assemblies of the ISCM festival from the festival.

- Organizing concerts of contemporary music by the ISCM-Romanian Section or in collaboration with institutions, associations, foundations in the country and abroad or foreign cultural centers in Bucharest.

- Press articles, radio and television broadcasts to promote Romanian music and knowledge of contemporary musical values. In this context has to be mentioned the monthly radio broadcast, entitled New CDs in the Contemporary Music Information Centre of the ISCM-Romanian Section, made two years running, at Radio Romania Cultural, by our colleague, the composer George Balint, a member of the Executive Committee of ISCM-Romanian Section.

- Regular payment of annual fee of the Romanian Section of ISCM at the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), with support from the Ministry of Culture, Religious Affairs and National Heritage.

- Participation of members of the ISCM-Romanian Section at international events devoted to contemporary music organized by the sections of ISCM:
- In Hong Kong (China): Carmen Cârneci, Mihaela Vosganian, Sorin Lerescu - 2007
- In Vilnius (Lithuania): Mihaela Vosganian, Diana Rotaru, Sorin Lerescu - 2008

- Sending annually of 6 Romanian works to be selected by international juries of WMD ISCM Festival Hong Kong (2007), Vilnius (2008).

- Romanian Music Today, vol II, double CD - an ISCM-Romanian Section project, produced in association with “Editura Muzicală“ of Bucharest.

- The Romanian Section of ISCM has organized the ISCM-Romanian Section Meetings – dedicated to presenting contemporary Romanian musical creation.

- New members in ISCM-Romanian Section during 2007-2008: composers Adrian Enescu, Laurenţiu Beldean, Ana Szilagyi, Mihai Măniceanu and musicologist Petruţa Măniuţ.

- Editing the numbers 6/2006 and 7/2007 of the newsletter in English of the ISCM-Romanian Section: Contemporary Music - Romanian Newsletter.

- International jury of the Festival ISCM World Music Days/Gaida 2008 Vilnius, Lithuania has selected, a work sent by the ISCM-Romanian Section: Shakti, concerto for saxophone and chamber orchestra, by Diana Rotaru, work which was interpreted in the Festival on October 27 by Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Robertas Šervenikas. Diana Rotaru received with the same opportunity the ISCM Prize-IAMIC 2008.

In the next period we plan:
- To organize a new MERIDIAN, ISCM-Romanian Section International Festival
- To continue printing the newsletter in English of the ISCM-Romanian Section: Contemporary Music - Romanian Newsletter
- To continue steps to achieve the double CD Romanian Music Today - Vol III, project initiated and developed by the Romanian Section of ISCM.
- To promote collaborative projects with other sections of the ISCM, with other national and international organizations, to promote contemporary music, mainly Romanian.
