Annual Report - ISCM Slovak Section 2005

As every year, the selection committee (A. Mudroňová, Ivan iller and Marián Lejava) chose six works for WMD 2006; we sent the works to Stuttgart. The WMD 2006 - again - did not choose any of the selected works. The artistic director of IVES ensemble, John Snijders, however, decided to select two pieces by Daniel Matej, Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten seyn and 4 Walt(z)er 4 Walt(50)er(when I’m  FIFTY  for 4 instruments  no.2) for their concert. ISCM Slovak Section accepts this selection as the works representing the section at the WMD 2006.

Daniel Matej will then come to Stuttgart as the official delegate and also represented author.

This year ISCM SS supervised three projects:

16th International Festival EVENINGS OF NEW MUSIC, 3rd concert series (NEW) MUSIC AT HOME and 3rd International Festival SPACE. The single concert of the Musica Danubiana project – the Austrian-Slovak group – was included into EVENINGS OF NEW MUSIC festival.

ISCM SS also co-operated with the festival Melos-Ethos 2005 - namely co-organised the first Slovak performance of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians and Tehillim and also co-operated at the preparation of the Melos-Ethos symposium From Perotin to Reich.

16th EVENINGS OF NEW MUSIC took place between 13 and 20 October 2005 and involved 8 concerts and 2 composition workshops. The main visiting artists of the festival were Alvin Curran, Christian Fennesz and Frederic Rzewski.

The concerts were well attended by a largely young audience, which proves that the festival concerts are embedded into Bratislava’s music life; EVENINGS OF NEW MUSIC is a space for presentation of the current developments on the music scene of Europe and America.

This year the festival was supported financially byMusic Fund, Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and US Embassy. Festival events were well covered in the media.

3rd concert series (NEW) MUSIC AT HOME comprised 6 concerts in September and October 2005  in the amorín Synagogue (a beautiful place just outside Bratislava).

The reaction of the predominantly young audience shows that this project has been well received so far. The amorín Synagogue is a space with the “highest quality” stamp; it is worth investing into this venue and to produce concerts of corresponding quality. The project was supported by: At Home Gallery, Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, Music Fund and Academy of Music and Drama Bratislava.

3rd International Festival SPACE comprised two series of concerts (4 events):

Evening of Slovak Music (3 concerts) in Gent, Roeselare (Belgium) and Bratislava (Slovakia), held in February -  April 2005.

Evening of Italian Music in Bratislava, 19 December 2005.

3rd festival SPACE proved that this project has secured its place among music festivals in Slovakia and abroad. It is a platform not only for contemporary music, but also for all 20th-century music, which is still rarely heard on concert stages. The pre-concert talk is an important feature and it is well received by the public.

The project was supported by: Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, Music Fund and Royal Conservatoire Gent.

The amount and quality of events ISCM SS supervises yearly shows that the trend outlined at its foundation in 1994 has been preserved: ISCM SS seeks to be an active member of ISCM family and to uphold its mission to promote contemporary music.
