Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

As a large music program at a major state university, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music produced over a hundred concerts in 2017 including student recitals, ensembles in every genre, faculty chamber and solo recitals, and guest artists. We have approximately 50 faculty members, almost 500 music students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, three wind ensembles, three choirs, two jazz bands, orchestra, and many others. Each year we bring composers of international stature to our campus to interact with our students. In 2017 we featured Michael Dougherty with masterclasses and concerts.

Contemporary music is highly valued in our program, and and virtually all concerts include music by living composers. Our own composition majors are active in their field through chamber and concert music, as well as media scoring.

In our capacity as ISCM Full Associate Member, our principal activity is to represent the composition community throughout all of Texas - a state with a population of 28 million, and 170 different colleges and universities. We accomplish this through a statewide call for scores which results in our six submitted pieces for each World Music Days Festival, collaborating with other institutions through faculty interactions and guest lectures, and through disseminating information about contemporary art music throughout the state.

In most years, we enable one or two composition students to attend the ISCM World Music Days Festival to encourage their own professional growth.
