  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

The staff and programs of New Music USA continue to serve as a passionate advocates for new music. We remain focused on what brings the new music community together in the first place: the music. We mean the whole new music community, from composers to performers to presenters, producers, die-hard fans, casual listeners, curious minds, and beyond. When someone listens, recommends a favorite to a friend, creates or performs a new work, or maybe even commissions a new piece, we’re making the whole community stronger—and bigger. We’re helping new music reach new ears every day.

Our approach to advocacy takes many forms. We provide over $1 million each year in grant support for the creation and performance of new work and community building throughout the country. The Music Alive Program, for which we partner with the League of American Orchestras, supports composer-in-residence positions in orchestras of all sizes, and our Project Grants offer project-specific funding to individuals and organizations. In June 2017, we announced our seventh round of project grants awards, totaling $546,000 in funding to support artistic work involving a wide range of new American music; the 107 awarded projects include concerts and recordings as well as dance, theater, opera, and more, all involving contemporary music as an essential element. (Our eighth round just closed on December 7, 2017; grant recipients will be announced in Spring 2018.)

We also amplify the voice of the new music community through NewMusicBox (link is external), profiling the people and ideas that energize and challenge music makers today. (On May 1, 2017, NewMusicBox marked its 18th year online.) Additionally, we continue to provide an online home (link is external) for composers to feature their own music and stream a wide-ranging catalog of new music around the clock on Counterstream Radio (link is external) (which has now been online for a decade). In the Fall of 2017, we fully integrated the contents of NewMusicBox into the New Music USA site creating a unified portal from which site visitors can explore the broadest possible range of new music activities in the United States.
