  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications: 

    Bilateral exchange program, 2017
    The Hungarian Composers' Union arranged bilateral exchange concerts with the Macedonian and Slovenian composer societies. In both programs 3 Hungarian and 3 foreign composers were played in Budapest while 3 Hungarian works were performed in Skopje with the domestic collegues' pieces, and the same sort of concert is to be held in Ljubljana in the Fall of 2018.

    September, 2017 – V4 concert
    The V4 countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) arranged a concert thanks to the financial support of the Warsaw Autumn and the Polish Composers' Union on 15 September 2017 as a pre-opening event of the Warsaw Autumn. One composer of each country wrote a new ensemble composition for this event (Hungary was represented by Metamorphosis by András Gábor Virágh).

    October, 2017 – Mini Festival
    ISCM Hungarian Section is partner of Mini Festival in Budapest, Hungary. The 3-4 day long festival performs pieces by Hungarian composers mostly. This year two pieces by the Israeli composer, Yinam Leef were performed by Hungarian performers.

    January, 2017
    Two Estonian composers were presented by their pieces at the closing concert of the Transparent Sound New Music Festival (Átlátszó Hang Újzenei Fesztivál). The Hungarian premieres by Mart-Matis Lill and Liisa Hirsch (members and head of ISCM Estonian Section) were performed by the Hungarian THReNSeMBLe. Liisa Hirsch also played in her piece as guest of the festival.

    Composition competiton
    The Hungarian Composers' Union announced a competition for works which were inspired by folk music, not in the way of a traditional folk music arrangement but a real contemporary composition under the influence of folklore. The three prizeholder works are to be performed and recorded in May 2018.

    Regular activities:
    Benedek Istvánffy Prize named after the 18th century Hungarian composer.
    The Hungarian Composers’ Union founded the Benedek Istvánffy Prize named after the 18th century Hungarian composer. The yearly award goes to a composer below 40 for a major composition performed the previous year. The Board of the Union decided to set up a Board of Trustees from three members of the Union who listen and read all the applications and suggest one (or two) composer(s) for the prize. The final decision is done by the Board of the Union every January. This year’s prize went to Virágh András Gábor for his piece entitled Sinfonietta.

    Miklós Orszáczky Prize – same as Instvánffy but for popular music – stronger connection to pop and jazz composers (but major pieces).
    The prize was given to a Oláh Krisztián for Suite for chamber orchestra and jazz trio.

    Zoltán Kodály Scholarship – partner
    Our Society delegates one member in the jury of the Zoltán Kodály Scholarship which is given to young composers and musicologists yearly.

    Publishing scores thanks to the work of Board for Support of Music Publishing of the Hungarian Composers' Union – ca. 15 scores each year
    The Hungarian Composers’ Union is the manager of the equity which has a certain amount of interest every year. This interest must be used to publish contemporary Hungarian music. The Board for Support of Music Publishing of the Hungarian Composers' Union could give money to 14 publications in 2017.
