During the year, Asa Stjerna and Thommy Wahlström was elected as new members of the Swedish section of the ISCM.
Operating subsidies from the National Arts Council was for 2014 unchanged at 56 000 SEK.
The competition for this year's Call for Works before WNMD Korea took place in late August this year. The jury met and sent its proposals in time for the international tryouts. The jury consisted of Eva Sidén, Magnus Bunnskog and Lisa Stenberg. Of the 12 works that were selected two went on to the festival in Korea 2016: Henry Denerins Fluchtlinjen works for solo flute and Henrik Strindberg O Freunde, let others speak ... for symphony orchestra.
ISCM World Music Days 2015 Slovenia
This year WMD took place between 26 September and 2 October in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Chairman George Kentros was the section's representative on site. The festival struggled with funding until just a few months before, however, and this was reflected both in the implementation and organization. Several of the concerts were played by musicians who obviously did not care much about the result, and because composers and delegates lived in completely different hotel several kilometers apart, there was virtually no connexion between the two groups, which deprived the composers one of their main motives to attend m ISCM WMD. Location, however, led to several issues raised in the General Assembly in an open and honest way with the promise of improvement on these points in the coming festivals. Among others joined British and Swedish sections of the ISCM together and promised to pay a scheduled meeting for delegates and composers during the festival in 2015, a proposal was received gratefully by the other sections. A glowing report over the festival in English, written by Frank J. Oteri from the American magazine New Music Box, found at ISCMs website:
The Swedish composer selected was Madeleine Isaksson's Terre l'abscence and Ansgar Bestes Rituel Bizarre. I do not write that they were made because it turned out that Isaac's work was wrong setting and the choir that would perform the work was not able to sing a piece for eight solo voices and therefore set up. Despite contact with the festival afterward it was impossible to get the work performed at a later time in Ljubljana- another sign of the poor financing and the problems that arise when the organization is deficient. Ansgar Bestes works were played, however, with honor and some concerts held a high level; the problem was that no one knew beforehand it would be a committed ensemble or a disinterested ditto, which affected the feeling that rested over the festival.
In 2014 we had two major exchange projects but because the Arts Council lowered our contribution it was more difficult to do anything as extensive 2015. Reduced contributions mean simply that we are trying to find small ways to spread knowledge and exchanges, which consists mostly of promising external actors to assist with advice and applications to their projects. Such cooperation that was arranged in 2015 was an exchange between Egypt and a number of other northern European countries, which in the first phase will result in Hanna Hartman travel to Egypt and is working to write a piece together with musicians playing Egyptian instruments. Additionally arranged the journal Contemporary Music its now customary music journalist course, where a number of participants attending concerts and sat down to write about contemporary music, the festival Sound of Stockholm.
We hope that more exchanges may be possible in the future and also looks forward to a continuation of the project with the Egyptian section.
The journal Nutida Musik
The Swedish section is the owner of the journal Nutida Musik. The editor of the journal have been in 2015 Andreas Engström. The magazine has come out with two numbers for the year, and as usual, we invite all members of the ISCM not members of the FST on a subscription to the magazine (members of the FST must already home to the mailbox). The newspaper also received for the fourth consecutive year, raised funds from KUR in 2015, a clear sign that the profile of the magazine is raised in Sweden.
The annual meeting took place on 25 May at STIM Hall in Stockholm. New member of the Board was Magnus Bunnskog, who also began working with the periodical Nutida Musik. This will allow for closer ties between us.
The traditional autumn meeting of members was held on December 3 at Studio 53. Autumn meeting discussed new member applications and featured talks and reports on the year's activities and ISCM arrangements. Tamas Ungvary told of a concert project he wants to launch in 2016 and we'll see if we can assist him in this in any way.
The website encountered a minor hacker attack this year and we had to summon lightning webmaster Fredrik Bergström to solve the problems. There are still some bugs left at the end of the year but we hope to take the opportunity to redo the website entirely in 2015 as far as money. Otherwise, we continue with the mailing showing the information on eg international tonsättartävlingar. ISCM Swedish section also has a Facebook page for a more informal and faster ways to keep members (and others interested) informed about what is going on in Sweden and internationally.
